Exposure is the thing that catches people out. Wind coming off the sea carries salt, and it burns foliage on anything that is not tolerant of it, which is why a shrub that thrives in Norwich can look scorched a few miles from the front. The usual answer is not tougher plants on their own but a windbreak: a hedge, a fence or a screen that takes the brunt so everything behind it has a chance.
Fencing takes a beating for the same reason, and a run put up to inland standards will not last here. Posts want setting deeper and in more concrete, and gravel boards keep timber off ground that stays damp and sandy. It costs a bit more at the start and saves replacing panels every couple of winters.

01. Our fence keeps blowing down. What are we doing wrong?
Usually nothing you have done, it is the exposure. Close to the coast a fence needs deeper posts, more concrete and often gravel boards, and solid panels catch far more wind than a slatted or hit-and-miss design that lets some through. Swapping the panel type is often the single biggest improvement.
02. Why do our plants look scorched even without frost?
It is usually salt carried on the wind, not cold. It browns leaf edges and it looks a lot like frost damage. Salt-tolerant planting and a windbreak on the exposed side make more difference than anything else, and a garden that has shelter can then grow things it otherwise could not.
03. Do you really cover this far east?
For projects, yes. Norfolk is our patch and a job that runs a week or more justifies the drive without adding to your price. We are not going to take on a fortnightly grass round out here, because we would end up letting you down.
