Landscaping and gardening in Horsford

Horsford sits on the sandy ground north of Norwich, on the edge of the old heathland. That soil changes what works in a garden here more than most people realise.

Gardens in Horsford

The ground around Horsford and out towards the woods is light and sandy, and it behaves differently to the heavier soil on the other side of the city. Water runs straight through it. That is a gift when you are digging footings or laying a base, because you are not fighting clay and the ground rarely stays waterlogged. It is less of a gift in July, when a lawn on sand browns off weeks before one a few miles away.

It also means planting choices matter. Anything that wants moisture will struggle without help, and the honest fix is improving the soil with organic matter before planting rather than replacing plants that keep failing. Borders here do far better once there is something in the ground that actually holds water.

Getting to you About eight miles from Eaton, which means crossing the city, not a straight run out. That suits landscaping projects, fencing and clearances well. Regular grass cutting this side of Norwich depends on what else we have on, so ask and we will tell you honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from Horsford customers

01. Our lawn goes brown every summer. Can anything be done?

On sandy ground it will always dry out faster, so the aim is improving how long it holds water, not expecting it to stay green through a hot July. Aerating, top dressing with a loam-based mix and raising the cutting height all help. Anyone promising a lawn that never browns on this soil is overselling.

02. Is sandy soil easier for patios and fencing?

Generally yes for the digging, and drainage is rarely the problem it is on clay. It does mean a base needs compacting properly in layers, because loose sand will settle under slabs if it is just tipped in and levelled. It is the sort of thing that shows up two winters later, not straight away.

03. Do you take on smaller jobs out this way?

Sometimes, though eight miles across the city makes a short visit less practical than a full day. We would rather say that up front than take a weekly round on and then start missing visits.
